Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing Wildcard and Subnet Masks:
Remember: 0.0.0.255 is wildcard for /24, not subnet mask!
Forgetting "no shutdown":
Interfaces are administratively down by default
ACL Placement Errors:
Standard ACLs near destination, Extended ACLs near source
Not saving configuration:
Copy running-config startup-config or changes are lost!
Subnet calculation errors:
Remember to subtract 2 for network and broadcast addresses
Mixing up TCP vs UDP:
DHCP, TFTP, SNMP, DNS queries = UDP. SSH, Telnet, HTTP = TCP
OSPF wildcard mask confusion:
Use inverse of subnet mask (255.255.255.0 → 0.0.0.255)
Assuming default VLAN is secure:
VLAN 1 is the default but should be changed for security

Lab Simulation Strategies
Read instructions carefully:
Requirements often have specific constraints (e.g., "use VLAN 10")
Use "show" commands first:
show running-config, show ip interface brief, show vlan brief
Work methodically:
Complete one requirement at a time, verify, then move on
Don't configure unnecessary features:
Only do what's asked - extra config can cause issues
Test connectivity:
Use ping and traceroute to verify your configuration
Save your work:
Even in simulations, use copy run start when done

VLANs, ACLs, OSPF, EIGRP, NAT, routing, troubleshooting

Process of elimination:
Cross out obviously wrong answers first
Look for keywords:
"BEST", "MOST likely", "LEAST", "NOT" - read carefully!
All of the above / None of the above:
If you can eliminate one, eliminate the "all" option
Trust your instinct:
First answer is usually correct - don't second-guess unless certain
Watch for distractors:
Cisco includes plausible wrong answers - know your material!
Never leave blanks:
No penalty for guessing - always select an answer
Read all options:
Don't pick the first "correct" answer - find the BEST answer
